Hanoi is denser, louder, and more visually chaotic than Hội An, and that's exactly its appeal — this is northern Vietnam's beating heart, where French colonial architecture, a thousand-year-old Old Quarter, and genuinely some of the best street food in the country all collide on the same block. Crossing the street here is a rite of passage (walk steadily, don't stop, let traffic flow around you), and the reward is a city with more layered history and better food than its reputation as simply 'the other Vietnamese capital' suggests.
